Language Arts

The Literacy/Language Arts curriculum aligns with New Haven Public Schools’ curriculum requirements, which begin with the end in mind by determining what our students are to know both when they complete each grade level and also when they leave our school system. The answers to these questions are entrenched in the objectives identified for each grade level. Based on the state and national frameworks and guidelines, the Power Standards provide the underpinnings of the Literacy/Language Arts curriculum and the starting point for all Significant Tasks.

In addition to the Power Standards, research from pedagogical and literacy authorities, as well as classroom research and experience, ensure that the practices in the significant Tasks maximize student learning. To ensure relevance, skills and strategies are taught in the context of authentic reading and writing. The instruction is dynamic and fluid, subject to ongoing assessments and differentiation.
