The Hillhouse School Based Health Clinic is an outpatient medical clinic of Yale New Haven Hospital.  It has been available to students at Hillhouse High School since 1994. Our hours of operation are 8:30am to 3:30pm, Monday through Friday during the school year and Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday during the summer. In addition, we have a 24-hour answering service for emergencies during the evening, weekends and school holidays.

All Hillhouse students can enroll in the health clinic by completing a permission form signed by a parent or legal guardian.  Services are aimed at, but not limited to students who do not have access to a family doctor, or whose families have little or no health insurance.  Students who use Yale New Haven Hospital or other community providers are also welcomed to use the school-based clinic.  There are no fees for services received in the clinic.

We offer a variety of health services which include: physical examinations including 10th grade, college and sports physicals, immunizations, management of chronic illnesses (asthma, anemia, weight management, etc), assessment and treatment of acute illnesses (upper respiratory infections, rashes, injuries, headaches, urinary tract infections, fevers), reproductive care (STD/HIV and pregnancy risk reduction counseling, assessment and treatment, and various menstrual disorders), and mental health assessment, counseling and treatment (including groups:  anger management, self-esteem).

The clinic is located in the same suite as the school nurse’s office. The providers from the health clinic work closely with the school nurse; however, the clinic is a separate service.  The school nurse and faculty may refer students to the School Based Health Clinic.

The providers in the clinic are able to evaluate, treat and often resolve student health problems. The primary goal of the clinic is to reduce absenteeism and keep students in school. Our location makes it easier for students to access health care while remaining in school.  Instead of taking an entire day off for a doctor’s appointment, students can be seen in the school-based clinic and then return to class.

Students receive appointment slips in their homerooms.  All students must have a pass or appointment slip to enter the clinic. Upon completion of the visit students are given a timed pass to return to class.  Faculty members are welcomed to call and confirm a student’s appointment, however information about the services provided is strictly confidential and private.

            The clinic staff members are:

                        Medical Director/Pediatrician- Dr. Sheryl Ryan

Nurse Practitioners- Sarah Vaughan, APRN/Site Manager

Social Worker- Onya Harris-Reid, LCSW

                        Office Manager- Dena Patton

We look forward to collaborating with you and assisting each student at Hillhouse High School to reach their maximum academic, emotional, social and physical potential.
