Mission Statement

It is the mission of James Hillhouse High School located in New Haven, Connecticut to graduate students prepared for success in a world of increasing diversity, technological change and global challenges.  Our task as educators, community members, parents and students is to create an environment in which all students have the opportunity to reach their greatest academic potential and to facilitate their growth as responsible and respectful members of society.

ACADEMICS

ADD AND DROP POLICY
In order to add or drop a class you must see your guidance counselor.

(CAPT) CONNECTICUT ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE TEST
The results of the CAPT assessment are placed on the student’s transcript.

COURSE OFF CAMPUS
Seniors with outstanding academic records are encouraged to take a course at Southern Connecticut State University or at Yale University. See your Guidance counselor if you are interested.

FINAL EXAMS
At the discretion of the teacher, seniors may be exempt from a final exam if the senior student has an A average in the class.

INCOMPLETE GRADES
Students receiving an "incomplete" have two weeks after grades close to complete the required work.

PROMOTION /GRADUATION CREDITS
In order to be promoted to the tenth grade, a student must earn six (6) credits; to the eleventh grade, one must earn thirteen (13) credits; to the twelfth grade, one must earn twenty (20) credits. Academic failures can be made up two ways: Repeat and pass the subject during the normal year or during summer school. A student must earn at least twenty-six (26) credits to graduate.
REQUIRED STUDENT LOAD
All Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors are required to carry seven (7) credits.
Seniors must carry six (6) credits and pass five (5) of them.

HILLHOUSE ATHLETICS

Hillhouse fields many winning teams in the Hammonaset Division of the Southern Connecticut Conference.
Hillhouse has traditionally been considered a powerhouse in the interscholastic sports.
The Athletic Director will help you to sign up for a team and/or get information about athletic tutorial.

ATHLETIC TUTORIAL
Students with at least one grade of C, D, or F, will attend athletic tutorial during their team’s season.
Students with at least one grade of D or F will attend athletic tutorial during their team’s off-season.

ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY
Students with two or more "Fs" will not be eligible to participate in interscholastic sports.

SPECTATOR EXPECTATIONS

  • Respect decisions made by contest officials.
  • Refrain from taunting, booing, heckling, and the use of profanity in any manner
  • Sit in designated area assigned to each school.
  • Leaving a contest prior to its conclusion with expectations of returning may not be permitted.
  • Admission to this contest is not a license to verbally assault others or be generally obnoxious.
  • Respect athletes, coaches, and fans.
  • BE A FAN NOT A FANATIC!

Students disregarding these expectations will be removed from this event and may be banned from future school athletic events.


SCHOOL OFFICES, SERVICES, AND RESOURCES

ATTENDANCE OFFICE
After 8:30 students are not allowed in the building without a parent.
The attendance officer keeps all the attendance records.
The attendance officer implements the New Haven Board of Education Attendance Policy.

CAFETERIA
Students are expected to act appropriately and with consideration for the rights of others. There are many students who will use the cafeteria during the school day. Every student deserves to find the cafeteria clean and litter-free. Students are expected to return trays, dishes and utensils to the proper areas and to deposit trash and paper to the proper receptacles.
The following activities will result in disciplinary action:

  • Stealing

  • Throwing food, paper or utensils
  • Individual or group disruption
  • Removing trays or utensils from the cafeteria
  • Taking food or beverages from the cafeteria
  • Fighting
CAREER CENTER
The Career Center sustains the School-to-Career connection by integrating career development concepts, academics, vocational skill building, and applied technology such as computer knowledge and internet use. Many career opportunities, services, and activities are provided for all students and staff. Up to date information such as career literature, tech-prep, internet are available in the Career Center. Current information necessary to be competitive in the new millennium is available in this key resource center.

FACULTY LOUNGES
Students are not allowed into the faculty lounges. Students who use the faculty lounges will receive a suspension from school.
GUIDANCE OFFICE
Each student is assigned a guidance counselor for all four years of high school. Counselors assist students with academic planning, career advising, college counseling and personal counseling. Individual appointments may be scheduled during a study hall and before or after school.
LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER
The Hillhouse Library-Media Center has many resources to assist students in research, special projects, or reading. Students may use the Library-Media Center with an appropriate pass from their instructors. Substitutes may not write passes to the Library Media Center. The Library Media Center is a place for QUIET research and reading. Students who wish to socialize should do so at some other location. Students acting inappropriately will lose their library privileges.
MAIN OFFICE
The principal’s office is located adjacent to the main office. Students and their parents should seek assistance in the main office for:
  • Lunch Application
  • Help with disciplinary matters
  • Telephone messages
  • Theft reports/Locker cut forms
  • Transcripts/Verification letters for the State of Connecticut
  • Appointments with the principal or assistant principals
  • Early Dismissal (Your parent or guardian must sign you out in the Dismissal book in the Main Office.)
  • Bus Pass (If there is not a yellow bus stop in your area, you must make a request for a city bus pass in the Main Office.)
NURSE’S OFFICE
The Public Health Nurse and the Hillhouse Health Clinic share the same location. The nurse’s responsibilities are separate and different from the Hillhouse Health Clinic even though they are in the same location. The nurse can be seen at the request of a student on an as needed basis with a pass. A teacher or staff member may refer students to the nurse for personal illness, medical records, and questions about health and safety.
PUPIL SERVICES OFFICES
The school psychologist, school social worker and the special education administrator have offices in this area. If you or a friend are in need of special assistance with personal problems, you will find the staffing at pupil services able to provide you with information and assistance. All PPT meetings are held in the special education administrator’s office.

SECURITY
There are a number of security officers located at different locations in the building. These officers help give us a peaceful environment to insure that the building, students, and staff are safe. Our safety secured, we can concentrate on our educational goals.

WORKING PAPERS
Working papers may be obtained at the New Haven Board of Education, Gateway Center – Personnel Office. In order to be eligible for working papers, you must: Be sixteen & show proof of age & have a "Promise of Employment"

 

HILLHOUSE HEALTH CLINIC

The Public Health Office and the Hillhouse Health Clinic share the same office. However the nurse’s responsibilities are separate from and different from the Clinic. The Hillhouse Health Center is a school-based health clinic. The Hillhouse Health Clinic is by appointment only. Appointments can be made in the office. A staff member or teacher may refer students. Students need a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian in order to use the clinic.
