Teacher Prep 1                                             Grade(s) 9                                        1 Credit

Level:  1                                         Length of Course:  Full Year

Prerequisite:  Parent and student request

Description:  This year-long course provides 9th grade students with a strong foundation in study and research skills, as well as an introduction to the teaching profession.  Field trips and conferences related to teaching are also part of the course.  Text and books include:

            Introduction to Social Sciences,  Bonstingl

            Among School children, Kidder

Assignments include text chapter assignments, reading assignments, a research paper on teaching units.  Students are graded on classroom participation, homework, class work, quizzes, test and the notebook they must keep.

                                                                                                                                               

Teacher Prep 2                                           Grade:  10                                          1 Credit

Level:  1                                           Length of Course:  Full Year

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Teacher Prep 1 or parent and student request.

Description:  This year long course challenges 10th graders to pursue both academic and career specific development.  Students work on a rigorous academic program emphasizing the skills required for admission to college and to ensure success in college.  These include activities to improve reading, vocabulary, and test taking skills in preparation for the PSAT’s and State Teacher Exams.  Students are led to take initiative in arranging guest speakers and lesson plans for their class.  Students begin to familiarize themselves with current issues in education.  Students  also introduced to psychology of learning and child development.  Finally, the students in Teacher Prep 2 work as tutors in a New Haven Public School for 1 class hour per week.  Text and resources used include:

            Hillhouse Library and Internet

Assignments include summaries of readings, vocabulary exercises, current events scrapbooks, a tutor experience journal, quizzes and tests.

Teacher Prep 3                                                   Grade(s) 11                               1 Credit

Level:  3                                                  Length of Course:  Full Year

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Teacher Prep 2 or by request

Description:  Teacher Prep 3 is a course designed to assist students who have an interest in teaching prepared for the various challenges.  Students in Teacher Prep 3 will focus on reading, test taking skills in preparation for taking the SAT, preparation and writing of personal statements for senior essays, and studying various genres of Children’s Literature.  Teacher Prep 3 students will spend at least one quarter of the marking period as Teacher Interns at selected elementary schools in the New Haven area.  Students will work as teacher assistants or tutor mentors for elementary students.

Teacher Prep 4                                               Grade(s) 12                                    1 Credit

Level:  1                                              Length of Course:  Full Year

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Teacher Prep 3 or parent and student request.

Description:  Teacher Prep 4 is a course that addresses the needs of students in making the transition to college.  The first marking period focuses on critical reading, writing and analysis.  The second marking period focuses on the principles of lesson planning and unit development.  Further discussion includes effective time management and study skills on the college level.  During the second semester students enroll in introductory courses at SCSU.  Texts and resources used include:

            Hillhouse Library Media Center

 

Assignments include critical reading notes, and essay writing, lesson and unit plans.  Students are graded on class work, reading discussions and written assignments.
