National Merit Scholarship Honors Semifinalists and Commended Students

NEW HAVEN, CT (October 5, 2018) -- Principal, Medria Blue-Ellis of New Haven’s Engineering & Science University Magnet School (ESUMS) announced today that Amir Hizami Anuar and Prastik Mohanraj have qualified as Semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. To be included in the group of approximately 16,000 high school seniors who are Semifinalists, these ESUMS students have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships to be offered next spring.
Additional honors were given to Owen Heaphy, Jay Hilton, Melina Joseph, and Muhannad S. Rabbani as 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Students. A letter of commendation from Principal, Blue-Ellis and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, has been presented to these scholastically talented seniors.
These honored ESUMS students have placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2019 competition by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
According to a spokesperson for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”
